Region IV began was chartered in 1938 when the original 20 members of ASHVE (the American Society of Heating & Ventilating Engineers) petitioned the Society in New York to form a chapter to be known as the Carolina Chapter of ASHVE. This Chapter served the entire state of North Carolina and included members in Greensboro, Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Raleigh.

In 1952 the Carolina Chapter elected to split into a Southern section with Charlotte as its home base and a Northern section with Greensboro as its base. These sections became the beginnings of what is now the Southern Piedmont and North Piedmont Chapters. In 1959 a third Chapter was formed when the North Piedmont members who lived in the Raleigh area formed the Triangle Chapter based in Raleigh.

In 1946 the ASRE (American Society of Refrigeration Engineers) Georgia Section was formed in Atlanta with 57 members and presided over by Dr. J.G. Woodroof (who is now in the ASHRAE Hall of Fame). This section would later become the Atlanta Chapter. The Savannah Georgia Chapter of ASRE was formed in 1958 from members of the Atlanta ASRE Chapter who lived in and around Savannah (which was decommissioned in the 1980’s).

The South Carolina Chapter of ASRE was chartered and began operations in 1954/55 fiscal year with 46 members and was the only chapter in the state of South Carolina. This Chapter had members from Columbia, Greenville and Charleston.

In 1959 the consolidation of ASHVE and ASRE created ASHRAE (American Society of Refrigerating and Air conditioning Engineers). This joining was formed with ten regions. Region IV of ASHRAE included North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Puerto Rico.

In 1963 The Greenville Chapter was spun off from the S.C. Chapter with 26 members. On January 19, 1970 members from Columbia and Charleston held a joint meeting and formed the Charleston Chapter which was chartered in 1971. Also in 1970 the Southwest Georgia Chapter was chartered. This Chapter only lasted a few years.

In 1979 The Society Board of Directors decided that the region was too large and split off Florida and Puerto Rico to form Region XII. Region IV retained all the chapters we currently have in Georgia, South and North Carolina for a total of seven Chapters which include Atlanta, Charleston, Greenville, North Piedmont (Greensboro), Southern Piedmont (Charlotte), South Carolina (Columbia), and Triangle (Raliegh-Durham).
